Getting started

  1. Nearby chat over Bluetooth works out of the box: open the app on two phones within Bluetooth range.
  2. Contacts. Exchange QR codes in both directions (sat → Add contact → Scan QR, or paste the meshsat1:… string). Without your QR code on the other side, your messages arrive as “signature not verified” and get no delivery receipt.
  3. LoRa (optional). Connect your MeshCore companion node: node → Find nodes via Bluetooth. Close the official MeshCore app first: a node accepts one Bluetooth connection at a time. For encrypted messages both nodes need the same MESHSAT channel secret.
  4. Satellite (optional). Enter the address and access token of your gateway box in the box settings and tap Save and check.

FAQ

How long does a satellite message take?

Minutes under open sky. Each message waits for an Iridium satellite pass at the sending and at the receiving gateway. Indoors or with a limited view of the sky it can take up to several hours. The message stays queued; the green check appears when the recipient’s signed receipt returns.

What does the green check mean?

The recipient’s device received and verified the message and sent back a signed receipt. “Sent to node” or “on orbit” only means the message left your side.

Are LoRa channels private?

Chats with contacts are end-to-end encrypted. Radio text channels such as Public are shared channels: anyone with the channel key can read them.

Can I send voice notes?

Yes, up to 32 seconds, over Bluetooth, direct LoRa and satellite through your box. Voice is compressed to about 150 bytes per second. On LoRa a voice note takes a lot of airtime, so the app warns before sending.

How do I delete everything?

Triple tap the MeshStar title and confirm (emergency wipe). Keys, contacts and history are erased from the device and a new identity is created.

“Box unavailable”?

Check the box address and token. If the address starts with 100., it is a private VPN address: turn on that VPN on the phone. HTTP 401 means the token is wrong or was revoked.

Where do I get a gateway box?

A box is a Raspberry Pi with a RockBLOCK 9704 Iridium modem. Ready-made boxes are not sold yet. Write to [email protected] if you want to join the beta.
